A 22-year-old college student was attending his first-year lectures with his five male college friends. They were all boys because he was introverted and had a fear of talking to unknown people, especially girls. However, he did talk somewhat to a girl named Anshika who sat two benches behind him. He spoke to her because Anshika was the daughter of his father's childhood friend and business partner.
Only two weeks of classes had passed in his first year, and today, he and his friends planned to leave before the official departure time (meaning, bunk the last two periods) and ride home on their bikes. (His parents hadn't given him a bike due to safety concerns.)
During the second break, he went to the canteen to buy Chowmein for himself and his friends. But when he arrived back at the classroom just two minutes before the break ended, he realized his friends weren't there. When he asked his classmate, Anshul, he was told they had already gone home. The boy was shocked. They were supposed to leave after the sixth lecture (the one starting after the second break), yet they had left him behind alone. Now he would have to take the public bus, which was usually late and crowded. He felt very sad.
The lecture began, and the professor (Miss Komal) entered with a cute girl,

introducing her to the class as a new student joining that day. The boy, however, was still preoccupied with why his friends had abandoned him. The new girl came and sat next to him, placed her bag on the bench, and put her face down on the bag as if she were sleeping.
The madam dictated the assignment questions and then instructed everyone to solve them immediately in class, not later at home. About ten minutes later, the boy was jolted when the madam announced she was coming around to check their work. He realized he had been too lost in his thoughts to hear the questions until the new girl nudged him and asked, "Can you give me those questions?"
He panicked and turned around to ask Anshika. The new girl asked him why he hadn't written the questions down. He quickly replied that the madam had never before asked them to solve assignments in class, so he had planned to get the questions from Anshika later.
He took the questions from Anshika, but by then, the madam had arrived at his bench and asked them to show her their solutions.
The new girl instantly replied, "Mummy, mera sar dard ker rha tha toh nahi kiya" (Mom, I didn't do it because I had a headache). The madam then asked if she was feeling better now, to which the girl nodded. The boy was completely shocked to realize that the madam was the new girl's mother.
The period ended, and the new girl then asked him, "Is the canteen open?" He replied, "No, it's closed, but why are you asking?" She answered that she wanted to eat something.
The boy then offered her his Chowmein, saying, "Eat this." She accepted and started eating in a childish manner. The boy was giving her a surprised look, so she explained, "Chowmein is my favorite, that's why."
Then she said, "You weren't paying any attention to me till now, and you're only giving me this and talking to me now that you know I'm her (Komal mam's) daughter."
The boy quickly countered, "It's not like that. My mood was off because my friends left me alone. I offered you this because I bought it for them, and since they left, I'm giving it to you because you need it. Otherwise, I would have given it to any needy person so it wouldn't go to waste."

📢 The Professor’s Acknowledgment

The real reckoning came the next day in Miss Komal Sharma’s lecture. She walked in, carrying the stack of graded answer sheets.

She looked out over the class, her eyes resting briefly on Rohan, then Siya, and then sweeping across the fidgeting faces of his old friends.
"I am pleased that the class average was acceptable," she stated. "However, I would like to specifically mention a few students. Firstly, Mr. Rohan. His journey in this subject has been remarkable. He started with confusion and missed deadlines, but he showed true focus and diligence in the weeks leading up to the exam."
She paused, and the entire class looked at Rohan. His old friends stared with renewed awe and a touch of envy.
"His score is a solid 88," Miss Komal announced. "This is a testament not just to hard work, but to a student finding his discipline and integrity, even when presented with... temptation."
Rohan stiffened, understanding the subtle yet pointed reference to the exam leak. Professor Sharma knew everything—not just the Chowmein, not just the bunks, but the ethical choice he had made. She was publicly validating his integrity without compromising Siya's secret.
She continued, "And I am proud of Ms. Siya as well. She has adjusted quickly and proven that she is learning to rely on her own preparation, earning a strong B+."

Rohan realized that the highest praise he had received was not the 88, but the look of respect and approval Miss Komal gave him. She saw him not just as a student, but as a young man who had grown into his character.

🧭 A New Path

As they left the class, Rohan’s former friends caught up to him.

"Dude, 88? Seriously?" Aman asked, shaking his head. "And Miss Komal knows your name now. You’re totally in with the faculty."
"Yeah, man. Can you... maybe talk to Miss Komal? We really messed up on the formula questions," Varun pleaded.
Rohan looked at them. They hadn't come to apologize for leaving him stranded, but to leverage his new connection.
"No," Rohan said clearly. "I can't talk to her about your grades. She values students who put in the work. If you want a better score, try studying instead of bunking."
He walked away, leaving them stunned. He wasn't the scared, introverted boy anymore. The trauma of being abandoned had led to the friendship with Siya, and the scrutiny of Miss Komal had forced him to discover his own competence and self-respect.
He caught up to Siya, who was waiting for him outside the department.
"I think you just found your new friends, Rohan," she teased, gesturing to the still-staring group of boys.
"No," Rohan said, pulling out a five hundred rupee note. "I already have the only friend I need." He held up the note. "Canteen time. This time, my treat. We need to celebrate my 88, and your honesty."
Siya grinned, linking her arm through his. "You know, for a quiet guy, you’re definitely growing into a very good 'bus buddy,' Rohan."

Rohan's college life has taken a surprising turn for the better.

🌃 The College Fest:A Social Event

The college calendar rolled around to the annual Inter-Departmental Fest, a massive social event where the campus transformed into a carnival of music, food stalls, and competitions. For the old Rohan, this would have been a nightmare—a crowded, loud environment designed to maximize social interaction and, thus, his anxiety.

For the new Rohan, it was just another challenge to navigate, this time with Siya by his side.
Siya insisted they go. "It's the best part of college, Rohan! We can’t just spend our lives reviewing formulas. Besides, Mom and Dad aren't here. This is our night off."

Rohan reluctantly agreed. He arrived wearing a simple shirt and jeans, feeling severely underdressed compared to the fashionable crowd.

🎭 Navigating the Crowd

As they walked through the brightly lit campus grounds, the energy of the crowd was overwhelming. Rohan instinctively pulled closer to Siya, his hands shoved deep into his pockets.

"Too much?" Siya asked, sensing his tension.
"It’s... loud," Rohan admitted.
"Stick with me," Siya replied, giving his arm a firm squeeze. "We’re doing the food stalls first. I saw a place selling golgappe. You can't be shy around street food, Rohan."

They spent the next hour sampling everything from spicy chaat to sweet jalebi. Siya was a natural in the crowd, easily striking up conversations with vendors and friends from other departments. Rohan, feeling grounded by her presence and distracted by the delicious food, found himself laughing genuinely for the first time in a major social setting.

🎤 The Talent Show Incident

The noise drew them toward the main stage, where the Inter-Departmental Talent Show was underway. They found a spot near the back, safely away from the center of attention.

Suddenly, a voice cut through the background music. "Rohan! Rohan Verma!"
It was Aman, one of Rohan’s former friends, standing near the stage with the rest of the group. Aman had a mischievous glint in his eye, clearly having consumed more energy drinks than was advisable.
"Our boy Rohan here," Aman yelled, pointing at him, "He’s got a secret talent! Rohan, come up and sing that song you always hum when you think no one's listening!"
Rohan turned scarlet. He did occasionally hum soft, popular tunes while studying, a habit Siya had teased him about. The thought of walking onto the stage in front of hundreds of students brought back the full force of his old panic.
"Ignore him," Siya muttered, tugging Rohan's arm to turn him away.
But Aman was persistent. "Come on, Professor's Favorite! Prove you're not just a bookworm!"

This was the ultimate confrontation: public humiliation from his former friends, pitting his new academic success against his deep-seated social anxiety.

🎶 Rohan’s Moment

Rohan stopped pulling away. He looked at Aman, then at the stage, and finally at Siya. He knew if he retreated now, the Professor's Favorite nickname would forever be laced with Coward.

Siya saw the flicker of determination in his eyes. "Don't do anything you're not ready for, Rohan," she warned, her hand still resting on his arm.
He took a deep breath, his heart hammering against his ribs. He turned to Siya and said, "I'm going to sing that one song. The one you said was the best."
Rohan pushed through the crowd toward the stage. Aman was shocked, clearly having expected Rohan to run away. When Rohan reached the steps, Aman looked confused.
"I'm here," Rohan said, taking the microphone from a bewildered co-host. He didn't look at his old friends; he looked out at the lights.
The music started—a simple, acoustic track. Rohan closed his eyes, remembering how he felt when he finally finished that tough proof in Miss Komal’s class, remembering the rush of earning that 88. He forgot the crowd, forgot the lights, and just sang.
His voice, usually quiet and reserved, was clear, true, and unexpectedly melodious. He sang a song about finding your way when you're lost and facing your own shadows.
When the music faded, there was a moment of silence, followed by an explosion of applause. Rohan looked up, stunned.
He saw his former friends with slack-jawed expressions of genuine astonishment. He then saw Siya, who was beaming, cheering louder than anyone.
Rohan walked off the stage, handing the mic back. He found Siya waiting for him, her face alight with excitement.
"You were incredible, Rohan! You have to do that again!" she gushed.
"Never again," Rohan whispered, his knees still shaking. But the panic was immediately replaced by an immense sense of accomplishment. He had faced down his biggest fear, not for an assignment or a grade, but just for himself.
He wasn't just the Professor's Favorite or the bus buddy anymore. He was Rohan, the boy who could sing. His old self was truly gone, and the new one was ready to face whatever college threw at him.

Rohan has achieved a major personal victory at the college fest.
