The unspoken rule of Bollywood is not undisputed anymore, or so suggests box office. Or should we say the Khans of Bollywood have lately given more misses than hits, case in point Race 3, Thugs of Hindostan and Zero. It's the content that rules today, and merely the Khan power does not suffice to pull enough audience to the theatres to make big money considering their colossal production budgets. Instead, films like
Ranveer Singh’s Simmba that released in December 2018 kicked off 2019 on an impressive start. However, it was not until
Uri: The Surgical Attack stepped into the theatre with its high josh that 2019 truly began and there seems to be no stopping ever since. It seems like the Vicky Kaushal-starrer unleashed the brigade of hits through the first quarter.
The period between January to March has given more hits, as compared to the first quarter of 2018 with no Khan to be seen. From Uri to Kesari, there were numerous movies that got the audience’s thumbs up and got the cash registers ringing. As a result, the first quarter has clocked in a whopping Rs 1060.72 crore. This is a great box office collection, as compared to Rs 838.81 crore of 2018’s Q1.
There are various factors that have led to rise in the moolah. One biggest reason being the availability of good and an array of content. While movie lovers were high on patriotism over one weekend, they also rapped their way to the cinemas to watch a musical. There is no denying that the Khans have been putting together a potpourri of movies and are expected to posed mammoth box office collections. But the new league of Bollywood stars is slowly taking that pressure off the Khans. While we’ve seen Ranveer Singh do it last year twice, with Padmaavat and Simmba, he did not let us miss the Khans much in the first quarter of 2019 with his Gully Boy.
His rapper avatar was loved long before the movie even released. Who can forget the nation chanting Apna Time Aayega? The actor’s transformation from Khilji and Simmba to Murad astounded everyone.
