Indian football even had a golden era from the year 1951-62 where India won 1951 and 1962 Asian games and been the best team in Asia. In the 1956 Olympics India became the first Asian country to get to semis and finished fourth.

After the death of the coach Syed Abdul Rahim Indian football degraded. The golden era of Indian football has only happened during his reign.

AIFF started NFL( national football League) in 1996 to recruit/develop players for the Indian team and soon added 2nd division and 3rd division in 1997. NFL was succeeded as “I-league” in 2007 and it was the only top tier league in India till 2017-18. AFC added ISL(Indian super league) as top-tier league in 2018 along with I-league.

From 2022-23 ISL would be top-tier and I-league would be second tier, I-league 2nd division would be the third tier and 3rd division/state league would act as the fourth tier.
