Amitabh Bachhan, Dharmendra's cult classic and all-round-fantastic movie Sholay (1975) features quite possibly the most exhilarating Holi scene to be ever put to the big screen. The scene depicts the protagonists of the movie reveling along with the people of Ramgarh before being viciously attacked in a surprise move by Gabbar Singh’s goons.

The songs of Holi in Bollywood go as far back as 1931, when the sounds and the music and consequently the film songs, made their first appearance in films. The earliest Holi song is from the 1931 film ‘Ghar Ki Laxmi’. The song goes like – “Mo Pe Daar Gayo Saari Rang Rang Ki Gaagar, Kaisa Dhokha Diya. . .


A song of Holi which still reverberates is a 1940 from Aurat, directed by Mehboob ( Mother India another Mehaboob magnum opus ) was inspired from that
